Start Your 2022 Fitness Journey with Pennington Biomedical Research Center Study

BATON ROUGE, Louisiana (WAFB) – “New Year, New You” is what many of us say as we set new health goals for the New Year.

As residents of the Capital Region seek to make changes and start their fitness journey, the Pennington Biomedical Research Center has a way to help shape some of these better habits.

Dan Rees and Duo Xu from Baton Rouge are participating in a national study trying to understand people’s reactions to exercise.

“I’ve seen it as you can see, very orchestrated and regulated, so I know it’s beneficial for me,” said Dan Rees, a study participant.

Rees is two weeks away, and others have been on it for over two months, learning the importance of the routine from a personal trainer.

“I think the profit is really approaching the new year, and people want to make a difference in their health,” said Dr. Eric Ravussin,

Associate Executive Director for Clinical Science at Pennington Biomedical Research Center.

One of the study’s lead researchers, Dr Eric Ravussin, said the study is aimed at sedentary people and involves 12 weeks of supervised treadmill walking and exercise or weight training bikes.

“We are in the age of precision medicine,” said Ravussin. “We need to identify responders and non-responders. It’s like a diet, you know. People ask me what is the best diet for weight loss and I tell them what works for you.

He said they’re always on the lookout for hundreds of participants and this could be a great way to stay true to one of your New Year’s resolutions.

“Usually the people who volunteer for these kind of long-term studies at Pennington kind of keep pace after that,” Ravussin said. “They’ve learned something, and if they want to re-engage because they’ve slacked off, they know how to do it.”

“It’s about getting to a plateau where you’re comfortable in the routine of doing it, and so you’ve formed the habitat and then you just don’t want to break it,” Rees said.

You can get $ 1,500 to participate.
